Started in New York City in 2004, Hip Hop Karaoke (HHK) offers the chance for people to pay homage to their favourite artists and properly represent their tracks in a 'karaoke' style format. While initially an underground event, HHK has blown up around the world growing a huge rep. HHK embraces the raw 'show n prove' nature of emceeing, allowing people to kick their favourite jams over proper instrumentals (no thin-ass re-worked typical karaoke beats) on stage with a real sound system and DJ. The format of HHK is straightforward, and designed to create a positive environment for guests and performers alike. Starting at 10 pm, we will be running 'sets' of 4-5 people every 15-20 minutes with the DJ spinning in between to keep things fired up. We want this to be an inclusive and un-intimidating event, that embraces more than the usual backpacker/hyper-gangsterized open mic type cats. We hope to get lots of these proper emcees out, but more importantly draw all the closet emcees out to share that track they kill in the shower every morning.
