Musically Love & Electrik (Roxy and Hando) are on their own planet with a style inspired by the 80's. These two have taken the Electro, Freestyle, Funk and R & B sound to a whole new place. Imagine Afrika Bambaata, Nu Shooz, The SOS Band, The System, Shalimar, Zapp & Roger, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and pretty much anything else that moved the dance floor and this is exactly what Love & Electrik are!

O.G Sample Shit - Jocking Jay-z'

Here's the New Jay-Z join't Jockin' Jay-Z produced by Kanye!  Let's speak on this track.. Kanye kills it, that snare really hits, and the guitar is ill.  Oh I forgot to mention JAY Z is on it.. Blueprint 3 on the way! 

The original is dope hands down.  It's taken from Run DMC's "Dumb Girl" off their Raising Hell album that Chris Rock called "the first great rap album ever."  You'll recognize the "Dumb"  sample used in Tell me when to go a few summers back.  The 808's used in this '86 classic are dope.. I love the drum fills.  Anyway the Jockin Jay - Z sample (Which actually says Jockin Jay Cee) Is right in the first line.. I look forward to doing some fun transitions using this joint!

 A few months back when the Glow in the dark tour was in town I missed most of N.E.R.D's performance.  We got there just as one of the girls on stage fell into the band pit!  Was that the craziest thing that happened for Pharell that day? I think not...Peep the interview with Nardwar the human serviette and witness P get blown away.

OG Sample shit - Cold Coffee and Donut

Last night I fell asleep getting together some music to make edits of when I stumbled across a Canadian pianist you may or may not be familiar with. Galt MacDermont is a Canadian Pianist who was born in Montreal in 1928. When the Canadian government appointed his father to be the Commissioner to South Africa he moved to Cape Town (where my dad was born) and studied African music. MacDermont later moved back to Canada and went on to score a movie called "Cotton Comes to Harlem" Starring Red Foxx.

His best known work is scoring the musical Hair! which he received one of his two Grammy awards for in 1969. Most of us should be familiar (get familiar!) because of the countless hip hop producers who sampled this Canadian Legend. Here are a few of my favorites;

The gutter, the streets... Sesame Street

Last week Skratch Bastid passed through Vancouver on his "We stand on gaurd for the funk tour." I unfortunately missed the show but I heard he was dropping some of those M.O.P gems to get the crowd hype!  Here is the version for those not young old enough to get in the club, this shit is brilliant.. 

Notable mention:  "How about some hard core"  M.O.P's first single released on the House Party 3 sound track in 1993, and directed by the then unknown Hype Williams.

A few months ago I made this "think" edit for the Red Bull 3 style competition. It seemed to get a good response at the time. Also DJ Hedspin played it on the EH!Teams Truth Mix show on flow 93.5 which i thought was pretty cool. Anyway I hope it comes in handy.

Wu Tang party re-cap

WU-TANG WU-TANG WU-TANG! Thanks to everyone who came out to the sweaty party we threw at Republic last Sunday.  Such a great vibe in the room and everyone was a fan of the music, I cant remember the last time a girl requested a GZA song.  Big up to cherchez for her opeing set and congratulations to Kallon John winning the pair of RZA tickets.  Be sure to join us next year for the 4th annual Wu Tang Party.
